CALENDAR OF EVENTS - Winter 2012 Programs
Discovery@Riverwood is pleased to offer the following events. These educational and fun activities are suitable for the whole family. Pre-registration is requested for all programs but drop-ins will be welcomed if there is adequate space and/or supplies.
The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) will make every reasonable effort to ensure that the described programs take place as scheduled; however schedule changes and cancellations may be required. Last minute changes will be posted to our website no later than midday the previous day for a morning or afternoon event or midday of the same day for an evening event. Asterisk ( * ) refers to programs offered for the first time.
Birds of a Feather: Nature & Art Together *
Need a break from winter? Bundle up the family and head to The Riverwood Conservancy and Visual Arts Mississauga for a morning of natural wonder and inspiration. Wake up your inner naturalist with The Riverwood Conservancy's guided nature walk featuring wild bird hand-feeding and then warm up with hot chocolate. Awaken your imagination with Visual Arts Mississauga and make your own chickadee inspired art project. Location: MacEwan Field Station and Visual Arts Mississauga. Cost: Free.

Astronomy Series Presented by RASC (Mississauga)
Randy Attwood of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Mississauga Centre) presents three fascinating talks for astronomers of all ages. All presentations are at MacEwan Field Station. Dress warmly; if the night is clear, we will go outside to enjoy a bit of winter star-gazing.
· Tuesday, January 10, 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Introduction to the Night Sky
· Tuesday, January 31, 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Observing the Moon and the Planets
· Tuesday, February 28, 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Choosing an Astronomical Telescope
Stream of Dreams *
In this fun, interactive workshop, learn about local rivers and streams while getting crafty. Colour a "dreamfish" magnet to take home and create your very own mural on the fridge. This activity is suited for children ages 4 -10. Pre-registration is required to ensure adequate space and/or supplies. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Join Stephanie Pearson from CVC at the MacEwan Field Station.

Climate Reality: It's More Important to Change Laws Than Light Bulbs *
Recently-retired career outdoor and environmental educator Grant Linney examines our ongoing failure to act on climate change and the obstacles we must face in order to address the greatest challenge of our time. Meet at the MacEwan Field Station.

Winter-time Bird Feeding
Build a simple bird nesting box suitable for small songbirds like wrens. All materials will be supplied and a limited number of hammers and power screwdrivers will be available. Bring your own hammer and power screwdriver (Robertson #2 bit) if you have them. Join Pat Kelly at the MacEwan Field Station.

Bird Watching Hikes
Join renowned birders Luc Fazio and Dan Salisbury for winter bird watching hikes in Mississauga. Great for families, new birders and experienced ones alike!
· Wednesdays, January 11 & 25, 8:30 to 10:00 am. Location: Saddington Park in Port Credit
· Wednesdays, February 15 & 22. 2:30 to 4:00 pm. Location: Saddington Park in Port Credit
· Wednesdays, March 21 & 28. 2:30 to 4:00 pm. Location: Saddington Park in Port Credit

March Break Family Fun @ Riverwood
Celebrate spring's arrival and abundant wildlife of Mississauga with free family fun at Riverwood. This daily program is designed for children ages 2 to 11 and their parents/caregivers to explore the wonders of nature together. Learn about animal habitats, birds, rocks and plants through interactive workshops and walks through Riverwood park. Meet others and learn how to engage your children in the natural world.
Don't miss this opportunity for spring break fun! Pre-registration is required to ensure adequate space and/or supplies. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times (parents, grandparents, caregiver, etc). Dress adequately for proper weather conditions. Our trails are not suitable for strollers.
When: March 12 - 16, 2012

Mark Your Calendar: Earth: A Celebration 2012!
Friday, April 20, 2012, is the date for our 11th annual Earth: A Celebration. 25 + years ago, seeds were sown which have now borne fruit. With your wonderful support for our annual Earth: A Celebration, we can move into the future to nurture successive generations. This evening of fun and philanthropy will be held at the Oasis Convention Centre in Mississauga. TRC is seeking donations of NEW items for our silent auction! Please donate to make Earth: A Celebration 2012 a success! We hope you can join us on April 20!
